In den 'Orolegomena' wird vom Herausgeber der Durchbruch zu einer konsequenten Konzeption der interkulturellen Philosophie dargestellt. D. Tiemersma untersucht, wie Merleau-Ponty durch eine Auseinandersetzung mit kulturanthropologischen Forschungen zu einer Erweiterung des Bewußtseinsbegriffs und der Rationalitätskonzeption gelangt. Die Ansprüche einer interkulturellen Philosophie werden von J. Hoogland von einer Habermas'schen Position aus kritisch überprüft. A.W. Prins interpretiert Heideggers 'Angang der interkulturellen Auseinandersetzung' trotz anders lautenden Äußerungen dieses Autors als einen wichtigen Beitrag zur interkulturellen Philosophie. Für einen Aufweis der inneren Affinität zwischen japanischem (...) Denken und einigen neonietzscheanischen Philosophen bezieht sich H. Oosterling auf Bataille, Barthes, Foucault, Lyotard und Derrida. Aus feministischer Perspektive wendet sich J. van den Oord der Frage der Universalität der Menschenrechte zu. In der Absicht, den Universalitätsanspruch der westlichen Demokratieform zu kritisieren, konfrontiert F. Uyanne afrikanische und westliche Demokratie-Konzeptionen. C. Jacobs beschreibt den interkulturellen Dialog, der in einigen wichtigen Kunstausstellungen in New York und Paris stattgefunden hat. Nachdem E. de Schipper tiefgehende Zweifel am hier beschrittenen Weg zur interkulturellen Philosophie ausgesprochen hat, werden zum Schluß in einer 'Replik' der Herausgebers noch einmal einige Ausgangspunkte des Projekts klargestellt. Die Beitrage des Sammelbandes widmen sich aus theologisch-philosophischer Perspektive der historischen Rezeption und der systematischen Relevanz des Freiheitsstreits zwischen Martin Luther und Erasmus von Rotterdam. Im systematischen Zentrum steht das jeweilige freiheitstheoretische Verstandnis des Menschen, seiner epistemischen und voluntativen Vermogen und seines metaphysischen Ortes innerhalb der Schopfung, besonders sein Verhaltnis zu Gott. Aus historischer Perspektive wird die Rezeption von Luthers Freiheitsbegriff durch Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Schelling und in der analytischen Philosophie untersucht. Der vorliegende Band enthält Beiträge zu allen systematisch wichtigen Texten aus Hegels Jenaer Zeit. Das gilt für die Differenzschrift über die systematisch relevanten Aufsätze des Kritischen Journals der Philosophie, die Systementwürfe von 180/04, 1804/05 und 1805/06 bis hin zur Phänomenologie des Geistes. Die Studien basieren auf Vorträgen, die auf der ersten gemeinsamen Arbeitstagung der Internationalen Hegel-Gesellschaft und der Internationalen Hegel-Vereinigung gehalten wurden, an der sich auch Hegel-Forscher aus Deutschland, Belgien, den Niederlanden und Frankreich beteiligten, die nicht fest zu einer der (...) beiden Gesellschaften gehören. Die im Buch versammelten Beiträge besitzen exegetischen, kommentierenden und aktualisierenden Charakter. Die Erforschung der Jenaer Periode Hegels erhält durch diesen Band, der die Eigenbedeutung seiner Jenaer Systemkonzeptionen eindrucksvoll dokumentiert, kräftige neue Impulse. (shrink)

The Austrian writer Stefan Zweig was a staunch cosmopolitan who, after the catastrophe of World War I, campaigned for peaceful cooperation between the peoples of Europe. He considered the biography of Erasmus of Rotterdam, a definite enemy of every kind of fanaticism, to be exemplary. In his novel “Triumph und Tragik des Erasmus von Rotterdam” (1934) he portrayed him as an antithesis to Luther, whose religious radicalism combined with nationalistic tendencies he detested. Zweig contrasted the cosmopolitan (...) humanism of Erasmus with the German Reformation of Luther. Under the impression of the political seizure of power by the National Socialists, which forced him to emigrate, Zweig's interest in the history of the Reformation in Europe grew. After “Maria Stuart” (1935) he saw in his novel “Castellio against Calvin” (1936) in Castellio an heir to Erasmus, who defended human freedom of conscience against the repressive theocratic Geneva regime. For Zweig, Calvin became a tyrant who in many ways resembled Hitler. (shrink)

Als im Jahr 1516 die neue Ausgabe des Neuen Testaments, das Novum Instrumentum des Erasmus von Rotterdam erschien, war dies ein herausragendes Ereignis mit weitreichenden Konsequenzen und Wirkungen. Sowohl die Reformation des 16. Jahrhunderts mit ihrer zentralen Stellung der biblischen Schriften und ihrer Exgeses als auch die Entwicklung der in die Moderne weisenden biblischen Textkritik lassen sich ohne die Arbeiten des Erasmus kaum denken. Dennoch ist auch Erasmus in einem breiteren Zusammenhang der mannigfachen Bibel- und Text-orientierten (...) Reformbewegung des Spätmittelalters, der Renaissance und des Humanismus zu sehen. Freedom is not identical with spontaneous willingness, as it was thought by Fichte. In the famous quarrel between Erasmus of Rotterdam and Luther is shown, that this idea of freedom has its origin in religious experience. Before this concept of freedom was identified with free will, Luther did understand human will as slavery of a will, which only by grace can be redeemed from bad influences and which leads to an understanding of liberty that is more humble and (...) sensible. Fichte succeeded in finding out that liberty is founded on interpersonal requests as basic condition that corresponds to this sensible point of view. But this is only a subjective phenomenon which by this manner, with regard to human behaviour, would be a reliable principle. In accordance to Luther’s grammatical interpretation of the indicative form of biblical speech, considering the Ten Commandments in the indicative Form, not imperatively, this good sense might also have inaugurated the Translation into the lawful conduct of human rights. As far as the law is concerned, this could be seen as a first step in realizing the idea of liberty.Freiheit lasst sich nicht als Spontaneitat wie bei Fichte bestimmen. Vielmehr wird am Streit zwischen Erasmus von Rotterdam und Luther erkennbar, wie sich Freiheit aus der inneren religiosen Erfahrung selbst in der Spontaneitat als ›Freiheit eines Christenmenschen‹ trotz Verneinung des freien Willens zeigt. Fichte ist es zwar gelungen, die innere Erfahrung der Freiheit intersubjektiv bedingt in der ›Aufforderung‹ nachzuweisen. Daraus ergibt sich Willensfreiheit als eine Stufe, fur welche die religiose Freiheit einen Verzicht auf en subjektiven Herrschaftswillen bereithalt. Freiheit im Recht lasst sich dann, analog zu Luthers Analyse des indikativen biblischen Sprachgebrauchs zur Kennzeichnung gottlichen Gebots, schon in der Einhaltung des Rechts aus indikativem Verstandnis seiner Gesetzmasigkeit erkennen. In his Education of a Christian Prince Erasmus applies ancient and Christian virtues to the functions of a Christian prince. Slovak humanist writer Ján Milo- chovský , who new Erasmus’s work, expanded in his Ornamentum Magistratus Politici the scope of the ethical and moral functions of a prince, focusing on three fundamental virtues: piety, justice and tolerance.The paper offers an analysis of Erasmus’s political ethics and examines the impact of the latter on the Slovak humanism of the (...) second half of the 17th century, especially in the writings of Ján Milochovský. ZUSAMMENFASSUNGLuthers Äußerungen zu dem in seiner Majestät verborgenen Gott geben der Theologie bis heute Rätsel auf. Will man Luthers Aussagen nicht ihrer Schärfe berauben, um die Einheit im Gottesbegriff zu retten, so scheint die Konsequenz eines dualistischen Gottesbildes und eines Widerspruchs in Gott unvermeidlich. In Auseinandersetzung mit Luthers Ausführungen in De servo arbitrio und mit Eberhard Jüngels Interpretation dieser Ausführungen sucht der vorliegende Text einen Zugang zur Verborgenheit Gottes mit Hilfe des phänomenologischen Begriffs der Entzogenheit als eines Moments, das jede (...) Bezogenheit begleitet. Gottes schlechthinnige Verborgenheit wird dann verstehbar als eine Dimension im Gottesbegriff, die diesem notwendig zugehört und auf Gottes Offenbarung in Christus stets zu beziehen, von dieser aber zu unterscheiden ist.SUMMARYLuther's utterances on God's absolute hiddenness in his controversy with Erasmus of Rotterdam pose considerable difficulties for systematic theology. They inevitably seem to suggest a dualistic notion of God, if their radicality is to be maintained. In discussing some of the most famous passages from De servo arbitrio as well as Eberhard Jüngel's interpretation of these passages, I suggest to understand the notion of God's hiddenness in accordance with the phenomenological concept of withdrawal : Even God's full and complete revelation in Jesus Christ is accompanied by a dimension of inaccessibility that can only be approached from God as revealed in Jesus Christ but needs to be distinguished from it. _ Source: _Volume 36, Issue 1, pp 35 - 52 A number of Protestants and their adversaries produced striking testimonies to the influence which Erasmus exercised on Protestant-minded people in the sixteenth-century Southern Netherlands. Yet Erasmus’ impact on the break-through and the further development of the Protestant reform movements is more complex than these testimonies seem to suggest. The first part of this article tries to probe Erasmus’ influence by using the evidence from the printing press. Data (...) about book production, book ownership, and the index of forbidden books point to a strong distribution of Erasmus’ work even in the vernacular. The second part of the article highlights how a number of rhetoricians active in Brabant and Flanders assimilated and adapted Erasmus’ ideas for a broader vernacular audience. The printing press, the activities of the rhetoricians, and schooling were interconnected agents of cultural and intellectual life which reinforced each other. They created in any case a fertile soil for religious change. (shrink)

Our self-understanding as human agents includes a commitment to three crucial claims about human agency: that agents must be active, that actions are part of the natural order of the universe, and that intentional actions can be explained by the agent's reasons for acting. While all of these claims are indispensable elements of our view of ourselves as human agents, they are in continuous conflict and tension with one another, especially once one adopts the currently predominant view of what the (...) natural order must be like. One of the central tasks of philosophy of action consists in showing how, despite appearances, these conflicts can be resolved and our self-understanding as agents be vindicated. The mainstream of contemporary philosophy of action holds that this task can only be fulfilled by an event-causal reductive view of human agency, paradigmatically embodied in the so-called 'standard model' developed by Donald Davidson. Erasmus Mayr, in contrast, develops a new agent-causal solution to these conflicts and shows why this solution is superior both to event-causalist accounts and to Von Wright's intentionalism about agency. He offers a comprehensive theory of substance-causation on the basis of a realist conception of powers, which allows one to see how the widespread rejection of agent-causation rests on an unfounded 'Humean' view of nature and of causal processes. At the same time, Mayr addresses the question of the nature of reasons for acting and complements its substance-causal account of activity with a non-causal account of acting for reasons in terms of following a standard of success. The Aldine edition of Galen, awaited for more than 25 years, was perhaps the most risky enterprise in the whole history of the publishing house, and it almost brought Aldus' heirs to bankruptcy. Although the editors were among the most renowned specialists of the time, the edition was harshly criticized by one former friend and collaborator of Aldus, Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam. Why? Was the edition so bad, were the manuscripts on which the edition was based responsible for (...) its quality? Or were there other reasons for Erasmus' complaint? This paper tries to give some hints in order to answer such questions, arguing that the role of Erasmus in the assessment of the value of the edition should take us into Aldus' house in the period of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century, and into the political and religious debate of the time. This article traces the philosophy of state developed by Austria's estatist opposition during the early decades of the seventeenth century. In the writings of Georg Erasmus von Tschernembl, especially, an alternative vision of state and governance took shape, whose implementation would have transformed the history of Central Europe. Gutenbergs tryckteknik ledde till en medierevolution som förändrades Europa. I 1500-talets början spreds litteratur, grafik och vetenskap, men också nyhetsblad om katastrofer, pamfletter om invaderande turkar och religiösa stridsskrifter. Medan mycket ännu vägde blommade renässanshumanismen genom Erasmus av Rotterdam. Han stod bakom en femtedel av Europas böcker, och skulle ge framtiden ett viktigt arv. Nina Burton skriver om Erasmus och hans tid så att man känner sig vara med när han träffar konstnärerna och de intellektuella? Albrecht Dürer, (...) Holbein d.y., Paracelsus, Thomas More och Luther? lika väl som påvar, kejsare, pedagoger och rebeller. Genom honom möter man en hel epok. Vilken var Erasmus hemlighet? I sina brev klottrade han självporträtt med dubbla ansikten, och hans förmåga att se två sidor födde ett samtal bortom all fanatism? en dröm om ett gränslöst Europa, där kultur och vetenskap knöt nya samband. Men då religiösa strider började skaka världen fick han mäktiga fiender. Erasmus visade vilken roll litteraturen kan spela i en dramatisk tid som har många likheter med vår egen. (shrink)
